What happens when you contact us
A calm, structured triage process designed around your safety.
When you call your nearest practice, our team will ask a few focused questions about your symptoms and how quickly they appeared. You’ll then be triaged and booked appropriately. Whether that’s urgently the same day or at the earliest suitable appointment.
We are Independent Prescribers
Most urgent eye problems can be treated in practice — no hospital visit needed.
Because our optometrists are independently qualified prescribers, most urgent eye conditions can be assessed and treated directly in our practices with prescription-only medication — and we refer you on only when specialist hospital care is genuinely needed.

When to call immediately
If it feels sudden, painful, or noticeably different, we want to hear from you.
Contact your nearest practice promptly if you notice:
- A painful or rapidly worsening red eye
- Sudden blurring, shadowing or loss of vision
- New double vision
- New flashes of light or a sudden increase in floaters
- Any eye injury or chemical exposure

Do I need a GP referral for urgent eye care?
No. If you’re concerned about your eyes, contact your nearest Bonellie Opticians practice directly.
What will you ask when I call?
We’ll ask about your symptoms, when they started, and how they’re affecting your vision so we can triage appropriately.
Can you treat problems in-practice?
In many cases, yes. Where appropriate, our independent prescribers can manage certain conditions with prescription medication.
What if I need hospital care?
If your symptoms suggest you need specialist care, we’ll guide you to the correct pathway and support you through the next steps.
What about outside opening hours?
Call NHS 24 on 111. For an eye injury, chemical splash or sudden loss of vision, go to your nearest A&E.
