A common cause of sudden changes, tinnitus and muffled sound.

Trouble hearing? It may be wax.

A blocked ear is more than a nuisance, it can affect your confidence, balance and day-to-day communication. Earwax build-up is a frequent cause of tinnitus and hearing reduction, particularly when symptoms appear quickly. If your hearing feels suddenly different, it’s worth getting your ears checked before assuming it’s permanent hearing loss.

Let us take a look at your ears

Quick assessment, clear answers, the right next step.

We’ll examine your ear canal and eardrum to confirm whether wax is the cause of your symptoms. If removal is needed, we’ll explain the safest approach based on your ear health and history.

Problems arise when wax doesn’t migrate properly and becomes impacted.

    Microsuction

The safest, most controlled method for many patients.

Microsuction is widely regarded as the most precise form of earwax removal. Unlike syringing or irrigation, we can see exactly what we’re doing throughout the procedure, allowing careful, targeted removal.

Another advantage is convenience — in many cases, microsuction can be carried out with little or no need to soften wax for a week beforehand. That makes it a great option if you need quick relief before travel or important events.

Suitable for more complex cases — microsuction can also be an appropriate option for people with a history of middle ear problems, perforated eardrums or vertigo-related concerns.

Is all ear wax the same?

Every ear and every type of wax is different.

Not at all. Wax can be dry, flaky, soft, wet or sticky, and it can sit in very different positions along the canal. The shape of the ear canal also varies from person to person, so no two removals are ever identical.

Even your own ears can behave differently. One ear may clear quickly, while the other takes longer due to wax density, position or canal shape.

        Say no to cotton buds!

They often make the problem worse.

Cotton buds don’t remove wax safely from the ear canal. Instead, they commonly push wax deeper, increasing the risk of blockage.

They also carry a real risk of injury. The eardrum is extremely delicate and can be damaged far more easily than people realise. The safest approach is to avoid inserting anything into the ear canal and let a professional assess persistent symptoms.

How do I know if I have blocked ears from wax?

Common signs include muffled hearing, a blocked sensation, tinnitus, or sudden changes in hearing.

          Is microsuction painful?

It’s usually quick and well tolerated. You may hear some noise from the device, but most patients find it comfortable.

Do I need to use olive oil first?

Not always. In many cases we can proceed without a long pre-treatment period, but we’ll advise you if softening drops are needed.

Can you remove wax if I’ve had ear problems before?

We’ll assess your ear health first and recommend the safest approach for your history.

          What if there’s no wax?

If your assessment shows wax isn’t the issue, a £25 consultation fee applies and we’ll advise on the best next step — often our FREE hearing screener.
