Choosing your child’s first glasses: a parent’s guide
From fit and durability to getting them to actually wear them — what we tell every family choosing a first pair.

A child’s first pair of glasses is a big moment, and the right frame makes the difference between glasses that are worn and glasses that live in a school bag.
Fit first
Children’s noses are smaller and flatter, so frames with adjustable or moulded bridges sit properly without sliding. The frame should be no wider than the face and the lenses should sit centred on the eyes.
Choose tough materials
We recommend impact-resistant polycarbonate or Trivex lenses for every child — they are lighter, safer and come with UV protection built in. Flexible frames survive playground life far better.
Let them choose
A child who picked the colour is a child who wears the glasses. We keep the whole children’s range accessible and never rush the decision.
The cost
Children’s eye examinations are free on the NHS in Scotland, and an NHS optical voucher covers all or most of the cost of a first pair. We carry a wide range that is fully covered by the voucher.
If your child is short-sighted, ask about myopia management — starting early makes the biggest difference.
